Welcome to the Wangaratta Historical Society

The Wangaratta Historical Society, is situated in the W.H. Edwards Museum, formerly Wangaratta’s original Fire Station, 34 Ford St. Wangaratta.  Established in 1959, the society is a research facility preserving and promoting the history and heritage of Wangaratta through its extensive collection of local history books, articles, newspaper clipping files, maps, and photographs.

For over 60 years the Wangaratta Historical Society and Museum has been operated by many dedicated and passionate people. With each “changing of the guard” we honour their selfless and invaluable contribution as we strive to continue the legacy of their work.   As in years past there is always a team of hard-working volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain, preserve and share the history of Wangaratta and region – to all of these, past, present and future we thank you!

We assist researchers with queries re the general history and heritage of Wangaratta and the specific history of individuals, families, businesses, houses, and events.

We welcome donations of historical works and resources to our library.
